Zamboanga Hermosa Festival 2020: #SafeHermosa2020

Virtual events, competitions, and limited live activities will mark the Zamboanga Hermosa Festival 2020 celebrations as Zamboanga City abides with the landscape of the new normal.

This, in keeping with the minimum health standards, as the local government prepares for a #SafeHermosa2020, and a meaningful reflection of Fiesta Pilar amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hermosa Festival 2020 will officially open with the virtual 2020 Opening Salvo on October 1, 7 PM, to be held via the official channels of the Festival and the local government. Replays of 2019 Hermosa events will be broadcast over the Festival Week, from October 1 to October 7.

Meanwhile, competitions have been trimmed down to only those that can be held on online platforms. These include: Batalla 2020: Hermosa Mega Crew HipHop Competition, Original Chavacano Video Music Festival 2020, Festival de las Bellas 2020, Hermosa Photography Competition and Hermosa TikTok Challenge.

While majority of events will be virtual, there will be limited live events that will be held from October 1-15. These are the: Cosechas de Zamboanga 2020 from October 1-15, the Novena Mass at Fort Pilar from October 3-11, and the Feast of Our Lady of the Pillar and Pontifical Mass on October 12.

A live event, the Las Ofrenda de Flores con el La Virgen del Pilar, will also be held to bring Nuestra Señora La Virgen del Pilar to different barangays on October 11, a whole day activity that will begin at 6 AM and will follow a route from Sangali to Ayala to Talon-Talon and to City Hall.

All live events will strictly adhere to the minimum health standards.

Zamboanga Hermosa, also known locally as Fiesta Pilar, is one of Zamboanga City’s most important festivals. It honors the city’s patron saint, the Nuestra Señora la Virgen del Pilar whose image is enshrined in the equally historic and venerated Fort Pilar. The feast day proper is on October 12 and is a special holiday in Zamboanga City. (Jasmine Mohammadsali)

Zamboanga Mural Painting Competition

Summer na Zamboanga is all about the youth, sports, dance, fashion, music and most specially, the arts! In 2016, the City Special Events team introduced the 1st Chalk Art Competition in line with the celebration of Dia de Ma'am Caling, the Birth Anniversary of Mayor Maria Clara Lobregat on April 26. The competition was successful but it rained right after the competition and the artworks faded after a few days. To preserve the artworks, we decided to change the format of the competition. Instead of chalk art, the teams will create a Mural artwork. When you say mural, what comes in mind is a concrete wall in the public. However, to make the art easier to carry around and display to various venues, we decided that the paintings will be in large framed canvas (4x8 feet). Fifteen teams registered and took the challenge and they have to create a huge painting for only three days. The theme is "I Love Zamboanga City."

This competition is also a collaborative artwork. When all of their paintings are arranged side by side, a bigger picture of Zamboanga will appear. I was the one who designed the template and the team drew lots to determine which panel will be assigned to them. The contest proper was held at Jardin Maria Clara, Pasonanca starting April 24, and culminating in April 26 during the Dia de Maam Caling. So here are the 15 mural painting entries. Check out the paranorama view of all the artworks side by side.

Here are the winners of the 1st Mural Painting Competition:

2nd Place

3rd Place.

Congratulations to all winners! Can't wait for next year!

Man Doodle Ta: The Beginning

The first time our team made a public doodle art is during the closing program of our college week. As the people were having fun we are the back busy doodling. It was so fun being with these guys while making a huge collaborative doodle. I was the one who started by making a huge typography of CSIT in the middle. Then they started filling up the wall with all sorts of doodle. So here's the photos of us during the event. :D

Man Doodle Ta!

Few years ago me and my classmates created a doodle group inspired by the famous doodle group in Manila called WeeWillDoodle. Our group it called Man "Doodle 'Ta!" which is chabacano for "Let's Doodle!". Our first public exposure was during our college's night. We setup used tarpaulins and markers to do our big doodle wall. Then we also had the chance to do another doodle for an event held at Catribo during the city fiesta. Sometimes we also have doodle sessions whenever we have used tarps. I really miss doing this! Visit our multiply page mandoodleta.multiply.com for the photos :D

Stickraffiti

Stickraffiti is a graffiti that you can stick everywhere. It is basically a sticker with doodles on it and you can put in public places. I posted something like this before but i decided to give it a new name. It was called "sticker bombing" but i think its sounds too scary thinking about the situation of the place where i live. It is more of a sticker graffiti than a sticker bomb so i created a new term, stickraffiti!!! sounds sticky eh? hehe. Anyways, I prepared the stickers back home and spread my art in the streets of some place i went last week.:D here are some snapshots ^^,

I can't take pictures of all sticks because i sometimes panic. I hope the authorities won't be angry :D its a favor to make the streets more beautiful.lol. nuff said ~

Holy Week

This year the holy week was earlier than i expected. For the past four years, we spent our holy week with the family outside the city but this year we stayed here in zamboanga. Anyways, holy week is not really important to me because i am not a catholic. But because im a Filipino, i still respect the sacred days where people commemorate the sacrifice of God for us. When i was a kid, holy week is a sad week. There are no shows in TV and all stores are closed. But i realized that the essence of the holy week is the love of God for us. My favorite part of the greatest story ever told is when Jesus resurrected. This is a revelation to us because through his resurrection, Christ became a life-giving spirit and we can directly experience God through the Spirit. When Jesus rose from the dead, we all celebrate. Easter Sunday represents the day when the resurrection happened. It is my favorite day in the holy week because of the true meaning of the easter day. because of this, i was inspired to create a quick vector art that i made during the eve of this years easter sunday. I hope you like it. :D

Mark 16:1-8

When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go to anoint Jesus' body. Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb and they asked each other, "Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?"

But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away. As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed.

"Don't be alarmed," he said. "You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter, 'He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.' "

Trembling and bewildered, the women went out and fled from the tomb. They said nothing to anyone, because they were afraid.

Sticker Bombing!

I did this last january at the city streets. I think the city was so dull and boring so i decided to bomb the streets with stickahz! i designed a pink sticker paper with my doodles and went to the city and secretly left my prints in the walls and posts. It's my first time to vandalize so it was nerve wracking. Adrenaline was all over my body but when i successfully landed my bombs it felt like a mission accomplished. I stop and take a glance at the opposite side of the street and look at it. So here are some snapshots of the stickers.

Surprisingly, after a few days most of them were gone. The second photo shows how the left part was ripped. I guess that the city janitors destroyed them or maybe the street children were so attracted to it and tried to steal my art. Well, that's it. I'm not sure if i'm gonna do it again, but i bet its fun to do it again!

Felices Pascuas a todos!

It's Christmas time again and i would just like to greet everyone a Merry Christmas! I made this during the Christmas eve. A little present to my loved ones. I hope this will bring joy to everyone. Have a joyous Christmas day and may you have a fruitful year ahead.
